“Desperate Housewives”: gay characters often got short shrift

HollywoodNews.com: So it’s official: the upcoming eighth season of Desperate Housewives will be the last.
I’m always interested in what’s in store for Wisteria Lane’s main quartet of Bree, Gabby, Lynette and Susan but I’m also hoping the show’s recurring gay characters of Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom), Bob (Tuc Watkins) and Lee (Kevin Rahm) get a prominent storyline.
The truth is, show creator Marc Cherry – who is openly gay – has mostly underused his gay characters since the early stages of season three. That’s when sociopathic gay teen Andrew Van de Kamp went from being one of the most highly-visible gay characters on television to mostly glorified extra although last season he did surface for a meaty alcoholic episode. Andrew also had a boyfriend, Dr. Alex Cominis, played by Todd Grinnell but he is not the fully-realized gay character he should be and Pyfrom is always terrific in the role.
While Andrew has his own place and no longer lives on Wisteria Lane, gay couple Bob and Lee (Tuc Watkins and Kevin Rahm) do live there. But they have only been mostly a minor presence since they made their debut in October 2007.Things started off promising as next door neighbor Susan (Teri Hatcher) kept trying to endear herself to the couple after getting off on the wrong foot. Things went from bad to worse when the men had a really ugly water sculpture installed in their front yard. At the end season four, they had a commitment ceremony but we never actually saw it since Gary Cole was busy shooting Justine Bateman to death and holding Dana Delaney and Marcia Cross hostage.

Tuc Watkins discusses “Desperate Housewives”

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: On the red carpet of yesterday’s Daytime Emmy Awards, I was speaking with Susan Lucci when out of the corner of my eye I spotted the tall, dark and handsome Tuc Watkins making his way past me.
I couldn’t break away from a conversation with the queen of daytime but Tuc, so great as David Vickers on One Life to Live and as Bob Hunter on Desperate Housewives, kindly made his way back to me a few minutes later.
I wanted to be sure and check in with Tuc who has been so busy lately with a return to One Life to Live which he juggled with a role in the off-Broadway play White Lies with Betty Buckley, Peter Scolari and others.
It was recently revealed that Tuc has been elevated from recurring status on Housewives to series regular which is great news for his many fans.
“We start up in mid-July,” he said of Housewives. “I was in New York doing a play for awhile, then did One Life to Live. All the timing worked out. Usually the timing works out so that I don’t get to do anything and this worked out perfectly for the first time in 2o years – the schedule worked out great so that I got to do all three. When Desperate Housewives went on hiatus I came to do the play, worked on One Life to Live and got to wear an amazing technicolor dream coat, marry Bo and Nora and things are looking good for me and Dorian to get hitched.”
So what will becoming as series regular under contract mean for his work on Housewives?
“They’re going to expand the role a little bit, they’ve made a commitment for more appearances. I think we can look forward to seeing more of Bob and Lee’s storyline hopefully.”
In the season finale, Lee (Kevin Rahm) had left Bob and while Tuc could not say for sure whether the two reunite, he did say: “I sure hope so. Bob without Lee is like eggs without bacon, like Ernie without Bert.”

What you missed backstage at the Daytime Emmys

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: I’ll have red carpet coverage galore from the 2010 Daytime Emmy Awards later today and lots and lots of bits of news that I picked up from here and there.
Chatted up just about everyone I really wanted to including Susan Lucci, Bonnie Hunt, Tuc Watkins, Michael Muhney, Jon Hensley, Eden Reigel, Brandon Beemer, Mark Hapka, Shawn Christian, Carolyn Hennesey, Doug Davidson, Drew Tyler Bell, Zach Conroy and Austin Peck, among many others.
But first let’s tell you who won what and share some of the backstage dish and the photos I snapped.
While there is debate about the quality of the telecast itself (Dick Clark tribute too long, As the World Turns Tribute too short etc), I must say that it was a dream backstage where everyone was in a good mood, the food they served us was delish, and the WiFi was nice and speedy!

The group shot is the very happy cast of Bold and the Beautiful which won Outstanding Drama for the second straight year.
Executive Producer Bradley Bell, who also won a writing Emmy for the first time, joked backstage that he felt like Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers with the back-to-back wins.
Could there be a three-peat?
One of the more dramatic storylines for the show featured the red-hot Betty White. Prior to the Saturday Night Live campaign and all the rest, White had a recurring on the series over the years as Ann Douglas, mother of Stephanie (Susan Flannery) and Pam (Alley Mills) on the show.
The storyline had Ann returning to Los Angeles to reunite with her estranged daughters before dying.
Agnes Nixon, creator of All My Children and One Life to Live, was in a chatty mood backstage after receiving a well-deserved lifetime achievement award presented to her by Susan Lucci who had said onstage “I would not even be here today if Agnes Nixon had not created Erica Kane.”
Miss Nixon said backstage that she is particularly proud of the social issues tackled on the show over the years such as Erica Kane’s daughter Bianca being a lesbian and having the first same-sex wedding on daytime.
Billy Miller, supporting actor winner for The Young and the Restless (pictured below), seemed pretty calm and collected backstage in contrast to the emotion showed by actor and actress winners Michael Park and Maura West whose show, As the World Turns, has been canceled and filmed its final scenes last [...]

Tuc Watkins signs on to another season of “Desperate Housewives”

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: There’s a good chance that Tuc Watkins will be getting more screen time when Desperate Housewives returns for its seventh season in the fall.
Tuc, so wonderfully delicious all these years as David Vickers on One Life to Live, has played the recurring role of Bob Harper on Housewives on 2007. Bob has been one-half of the gay couple on Wisteria Lane married to Lee (Kevin Rahm) who left Bob at the end of last season.
Not sure of Kevin will be back but I’m damned glad Tuc will and, hopefully, will get the kinds of storylines he is so capable of doing.

From Harvey Keitel to Ron Burkle and everything in between

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: Yes, that was Harvey Keitel having dinner at the Waverly Inn the other night. The Waverly remains the hot spot of the West Village despite losing our pal, chef John deLucie to the new Lion, east of Sixth Avenue…
Hilarious: “One Life to Live” ’s ad-libbing Tuc Watkins got a dig in on Scientology on Monday, claimed he was the minister who married Tom and Katie, and wore Joseph’s amazing technicolor dreamcoat from a road production; the show played Sam & Dave’s “Hold On I’m Coming” during a great wedding episode as well. Star Bobby Woods (pictured) is a big friend/fan of legend Sam Moore…
…Megabillionaire Ron Burkle seen at T-Bar at Savanna’s in Southampton…No idea if his Miramax deal is on or off…Phillippe Chow in Easthampton hosted an eclectic group: Blackstone Group’s Stephen Schwartzman, Stavros Niarchos, Vito Schnabel, Devon Aoki, and deejay Paul Oakenfold…Not, believe me, at the same table…

“Desperate Housewives’” Tuc Watkins discusses “White Lies”

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: There’s a reason why Tuc Watkins has had more than one job in recent years: the man has a whole lot of talent.
I’m a huge Tuc fan and have enjoyed him in his best-known role as David Vickers on One Life to Live for more than a decade as well as his run on Showtime’s Beggars and Choosers and current role on ABC’s Desperate Housewives.
Tuc has been able to repeatedly come and go from OLTL in order to do other projects over the years and the latest is the off-Broadway play White Lies. He has the title role of Joe White, a 40something womanizing bachelor who spins a web of lies to pretend to grant the dying wish of his mother to have grandchildren. The cast also includes the great Betty Buckley, Peter Scolari, Rena Strober, and Christy Carlson Romano.
