John Leguizamo’s “Fugly” nabbed by 108 Media

Further flexing the muscles of its worldwide sales and distribution operation at this year’s European Film Market, 108 Media has just sealed a deal on FUGLY!, an autobiographical comedy written by and starring John Leguizamo, it was announced by 108 CEO Abhi Rastogi. With foreign sales commencing immediately in Berlin, the film will also see a theatrical release in North America via 108 Media and it’s distribution partner, Paladin. FUGLY! Is slated to open in the third quarter of this year.
A fictionalized rendering of his acclaimed one-man show, “Ghetto Klown,” (which played on Broadway prior to an extensive international tour), FUGLY! casts Leguizamo as Jesse Sanchez, a Latino comic who has a near-death experience that forces him to revisit his personal and professional highs and lows. Told in a style that befits the envelope-pushing Jesse–and Leguizamo–the film blends past, present, fantasy, and reality to tell of one man’s hilarious quest for fame, fortune, and fulfillment. Directed by Alfredo De Villa, whose previous work includes the award-winning drama “Washington Heights,” and the Hispanic holiday hit, “Nothing Like The Holidays,” (which also toplined Leguizamo), FUGLY! boasts an ensemble cast headed by Oscar-nominee Rosie Perez, Radha Mitchell, Griffin Dunne, Yul Vasquez,Tomas Milian, and Ally Sheedy.
About the deal Leguizamo says, “I’m very honored to be working with 108 Media’s honcho Mark Urman, who I have always looked up to in the independent scene. This is my first foray into screenwriting and in trying to up-end a format by making an ‘anti~romantic comedy.’ We went very sexual, very aggressive, and exposed some of my life through the character of Jesse. ‘Fugly’ was a term we used and invented in New York when i was a kid for anything truly abhorrent. It was used on me many a time in my hood. This time I’m appropriating it. This is my revenge through art!”
Rastogi says, “we are honored that John chose to entrust this passion project to us, and we are looking forward to bringing it to audiences around the world.” 108 Media COO Nathaniel Warsh adds, “one thing that sets us apart from other companies is that, through our partnership with Mark Urman and Paladin, we aren’t merely selling FUGLY!, we are committing to it fully. By overseeing the worldwide marketing, working closely with the talent and, most importantly, funding the North American P&A ourselves, we prove we really believe in this film. Frankly, there’s no [...]

Jon Hamm Directs Mad Men Episode 3

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: “Mad Men” is coming. There are no spoilers, no official clues. For the Los Angeles premiere, people are being sworn on their deceased relatives’ graves not to say a word about what they’re shown. No one knows if there’s a New York premiere or even screening DVDs. I think it’s great. But you know, we are able to divine a few things. First of all, star Jon Hamm directs episode 3 called “Tea Party.” Episode 1 and 2 are a two parter on opening night, March 25th, called “A Little Kiss.”
Hmmm…A little kiss between divorced Don and Betty Draper? Could be. You never know. The second week comes “Tea Leaves.” Episode 4, in the third week, is called “Mystery Date.” No director is listed. “Signal 30″ is the title of Episode 5, which I’ve written about on Showbiz411 .
The production has been very scarce with details, but one: Pete and Trudy Campbell have had their baby since we last saw them, and it’s a girl named Tammy. (So Trudy.) A pair of twins have been hired to the play the baby. How long this season before Trudy discovers Pete already has a child, with Peggy? And: that “little kiss”– I will still bet good money that Don marries Megan and that ex wife Betty is a season long interference. Gotta have friction in the drama, kids.

Simon Cowell’s ‘X-Factor’ fails to live up to expectations

HollywoodNews.com: There has been a lot of hype for Simon Cowell’s U.S. ‘X-Factor,’ but it looks like it couldn’t live up to all the press.
The show premiered last night and reportedly got only half the ratings that ‘American Idol’ got with its last season premiere, states TMZ. Not only that, but the show didn’t even take first place last night as ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Criminal Minds’ came out on top.
Cowell has made it clear that he hoped to beat out ‘Idol’ when it came to ratings, but so far, the show definitely isn’t doing that.

Julia Stiles, America Ferrera in a comedic “Disaster”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: When does breakfast turn into potential Armageddon? We’re going to have to check out “It’s a Disaster” to find out.
The literal-titled comedy just added Julia Stiles and America Ferrera in a movie about “four couples who meet for Sunday Brunch only to discover they are stuck in a house together as the world may be about to end,” according to a release. Todd Berger will direct from his own script, and will feature members of the comedy troupe The Vacationeers, including Kevin M. Brennan, Jeff Grace, Blaise Miller, and Berger, himself.
“It’s a crazy story and I was convinced Julia and America would think I’m crazy too, but I’m thrilled they get my sense of humor. I’m excited to have them on board,” said Berger.
From the release:
Julia Stiles’ most recent project is Showtime’s critically acclaimed series DEXTER, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. Over the years, Stiles has made her mark on the big screen starring in the BOURNE Trilogy opposite Matt Damon (THE BOURNE IDENTITY, THE BOURNE SUPREMACY and THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM); the Shakespearean film adaptations HAMLET, O, and TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU; THE BUSINESS OF STRANGERS; SAVE THE LAST DANCE, David Mamet’s STATE & MAIN, and MONA LISA SMILE.
America Ferrera is best known for her fearless portrayal of Betty Suarez on ABC television’s hit comedy UGLY BETTY, a role that earned her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as ALMA and Imagen awards. Ferrera’s other screen credits include David Ayer’s upcoming END OF WATCH opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, THE DRY LAND, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, LORDS OF DOGTOWN, HOW THE GARCIA SISTERS SPENT THEIR SUMMER, UNDER THE SAME MOON, and both parts of the THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS.

Betty Ford Passes Away at 93

HollywoodNews.com: The former first lady, Betty Ford, died on Friday, according to a family friend. The 93-year-old founded the Betty Ford Center, a treatment hospital for alcohol and drug addiction in California. Her death was confirmed by chairman emeritus of the Ford Foundation, Marty Allen.
According to Access Hollywood, Betty’s own “triumph over drug and alcohol addiction became a beacon of hope for addicts and the inspiration for her Betty Ford Center.” She was reportedly modest about her accomplishments, and helped thousands of people overcome their addictions.
The wife of former president, Gerald Ford (who also died at age 93) “pressed for abortion rights and the Equal Rights Amendment”. She also fought breast cancer and suffered from severe arthritis, all while battling addictions of her own.
How will you remember Betty Ford?

‘Glee’s’ Chris Colfer on his hopes for a romance and more

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: The interview with Chris Colfer in ‘USA Weekend’ is nice but the first sentence of the story is ridiculous: It has been almost 20 years since we’ve seen a gay teenage character on TV.
Okay, Wilson Cruz’s Ricky on ‘My So-Called Life’ was nearly two decades ago but Wilson would be the first to point out that since then, there has been all kinds of gay teens portrayed on television including Jack on ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ Justin on ‘Ugly Betty,’ Andrew Van de Kamp on ‘Desperate Housewives’ and on and on. That’s just a trio of network characters. There’s been gay teens on cable’s ‘Queer as Folk,’ ‘Greek,’ ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ and more.
That said, Colfer’s Kurt Hummel is exquisite as is the actor who plays him.
Here are some excerpts from Colfer’s chat with ‘USA Weekend’:
Winning the Golden Globe: “I was so shocked. I’ve had that dream so many times. I haven’t missed watching [the Golden Globes] since I was 8. I don’t even remember hearing my name or giving the acceptance speech.”
A role model. “One of the nicest things I’ve heard so far is how powerful it is to see a positive portrayal of a gay teenager on television. I get so many fan letters from people telling me their own coming-out stories. It’s so funny: You always hear that as an actor you’re not supposed to be open about your homosexuality. And now here I am, and I’m 20 years old and I’m myself and I’ve [won] a Golden Globe!
