“Skyfall” topped the box office in its fifth weekend

The decision by Warner Bros. to move The Gangster Squad (trailer) to January, 2013 and Universal’s choice to move Les Miserables from next weekend to Christmas day should have caused a giant game of musical chairs. It didn’t, and now we have the second December weekend in a row (with one more to come) with just a single new release). Meanwhile the last two weekends of the year are going to be jam-packed with major films (Jack Reacher, This Is Forty, DJango Unchained, The Guilt Trip, etc.), all of which could have *easily* topped the box office and/or dominated the competition had they opened this weekend or last weekend. But weekends that are barren of new releases save for a Gerald Butler vehicle tend to be very boring box office weekends indeed.
But this weekend saw but a single half-hearted new release, a Gerald Butler rom-com that once again proves that Butler is only a movie star when he has a bigger co-star beside him. And while Jessica Biel may be a better actress than the mainstream material she gets offered would attest, she ain’t Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Anniston (or Jamie Foxx for that matter). Play For Keeps debuted with $6 million this weekend. The film earned a B+ from Cinemascore while playing 57% female and 74% over 25 years old. Forgive me if no one cares, save to feel bad for the careers of Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Judy Greer as they are forced to play desperate soccer moms who just can’t resist Mr. Butler. 300 was a long time ago, and it’s tough to be a movie star when your break-out role renders you unrecognizable. He’ll continue to work because the industry still thinks the man who killed Joel Schumacher’s Phantom of the Opera (he can’t sing, he really can’t sing) is a next wave movie star. But I think it’s time to call time-of-death on Butler’s alleged movie stardom.

Why some comic adaptations failed: Iron Man 2, Punisher: War Zone, Superman Returns, Hulk

HollywoodNews.com: Actor Tom Hiddleston wrote an eloquent essay yesterday for The Guardian basically praising and defending the sub-genre known as the superhero picture. Plenty of disdain for the genre comes from the very notion that it’s big-budget entertainment based on literature that was technically intended for children that gobbles up production dollars and screen space that otherwise might be allotted for more explicitly grown-up fare. But at least some of the alleged weariness of this specific type of film (the superhero comic book adaptation) comes from a feeling that all-too many of them are basically telling the same story. You’ve generally got the standard origin story which (let’s be honest) basically takes Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie and pours it into a different color bottle (I say that as a big fan of Spider-Man and Captain America). Then you have the sequels, which are quite often merely a case of escalation and/or the hero dealing with self-doubt often while in combat with a ‘bigger/badder’ version of himself (again, thank you Superman II). But over the last twenty years or so, there have been a handful of high-profile comic book films that have attempted to play around with the formula but have artistically failed anyway. As a rebuttal to the idea that ‘all superhero movies are the same’ as well as a reaffirmation of the idea that ‘it’s not what it’s about, but how it’s about it’, let’s take a look at five comic book adaptations that didn’t play it safe, but didn’t come out on top either.
Batman & Robin (1997)
I would argue that it’s a sign of maturity among film pundits and critics when they are finally adult enough to realize that Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin is not the worst film ever made. Peel away all the attempted camp, the self-depreciating homoerotic jokes, the terrible lead performance from Arnold Schwarzenegger and you’re left with simply a good story told very poorly. As the fourth film in a franchise, Schumacher and company had a bit more leeway in terms of where they wanted to take their film this time around. And as such, they told a rather thoughtful tale of an adult and sane Bruce Wayne trying to figure out how to be an appropriate head to his surrogate family. No longer wracked with guilt over his parents’ deaths, Wayne [...]

Where is Robert Pattinson’s “Bel Ami”?

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: IMDB Pro lists its release date as August 25th. Yes, that’s August 25th of 2011 (just 39 days from today). But, if it’s set to open so soon, where are the promos? Where’s the press? Where’s the fanfare around “Bel Ami”?
We asked an identical question earlier this year, after some fishiness following the distribution company’s statement about the film’s release. Since our February article, there have been more new questions than answers. Per IMDB, the August 25th release date is attributed to Greece. Three September release dates are subsequently listed for Denmark, Norway, and France. Yet, the distribution company’s earlier announcement about an August 2011 U.K. release date is nowhere to be found, and it seems nobody knows when this film will release in the U.S.
It gets weirder: a June 8th “Breaking Dawn” featurette in The Hollywood Reporter peripherally mentioned an October 19th release date for “Bel Ami”. Yet, this is the only mention any reputable venue has made, and when a skeptical fan left a comment asking for additional confirmation, The Hollywood Reporter did not reply.
There are other clues that “Bel Ami” may not be forthcoming—at least not this summer or fall. IMDB lists the film as “in production,” yet films in the editorial phase are typically listed as being in “post-production”. And there doesn’t appear to be any new press activity even in the markets where IMDB says the film is set to open in just over a month.
So, where is “Bel Ami”? And, if it will be released any time soon, why would its distributors miss opportunities to promote it? Given its star-studded cast (Uma Thurman, Kristen Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci support Pattinson in the film) and an ongoing information vacuum, the film’s absence won’t go unnoticed by the mainstream for long.

Sean Penn in Cannes Raising Money for Haiti

HollywoodNews.com: Tonight’s the annual amFAR dinner. But with no Sharon Stone (she was ousted last year in a political squabble), the once mighty AIDS fundraiser has been eclipsed. In the last three days, Sean Penn, director Paul Haggis, and supermodel Naomi Campbell have tapped the wealthy mainstays of Cannes for their own important causes–Haiti, and Japan. Last night, Penn’s J/P Foundation raised between $500,000 and $700,000 at a swanky dinner at the Carlton Hotel.
Philanthropist Ella Krasner hosted Robert and Grace DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, Richard Perry, Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell, Ryan Gosling, Rosario Dawson, Faye Dunaway, Roberta Armani (a sponsor), the people from Maybach autos, a Saudi prince, Harvey Weinstein and a roomful of 200 or so people who sported diamonds and more diamonds. Sean, who is so passionate about Haiti, spoke eloquently and persuasively before auctioning off rare items like walking the red carpet with him and Thurman on Friday for the premiere of his film, “This Must Be The Place.”
Uma, by the way, donated a huge but undisclosed amount to the cause. She told me: “Life has been good to me, I’m lucky. So I want to give back.” She’s a peach.
Then: everyone headed to the Martinez Hotel for Paul Haggis’s Artists for Peace and Justice. That’s where siblings Jane and Peter Fonda ran into each other, and Haggis entertained stars from all the movies here. Money from both events went to Haiit relief. Earlier in the week, Naomi Campbell raised around $1 million for Japan relief with her fashion show.
The only big party that raised no money this week: Microsoft co founder Paul Allen fielded about half a dozen stars and tons of extras to his behemoth Octopus yacht. Allen, recovering from lymphoma, played the guitar with his rock band while guests got to see his full sized yellow submarine. Allen donated around $14 million to various charities in 2009, but on Tuesday night the party “was just to show off how much money he has,” a celebrity guest told me.
Not at Allen’s shindig: DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, or even Harvey Weinstein. And of course, no press allowed.
Tonight: the AmFAR event, with no Sharon Stone, actress/model Milla Jovovich singing a song, a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor, and two songs from a surprise guest that’s supposed to be Janet Jackson but very likely is someone else. But in Cannes: the premiere of [...]

Robert de Niro Honored at the Cannes Film Festival Opening Night

HollywoodNews.com: It was a New York opening night for the 2011 Festival de Cannes. Robert DeNiro spoke a little halting French and was honored as head of the jury during a long but glamorous celebration at the Palais des Festivals. Fellow New Yorker Woody Allen got huge ovations at the beginning and end of the premiere of his “Midnight in Paris.”

Star Owen Wilson sat through the screening–he told me it was the first time he’d sat through one of his premieres in 11 years. He was so overwhelmed by the praise he kept getting all night–especially at the swanky opening night dinner–thaty he was reeling. And Owen Wilson is never at a shortage of words!
Meantime, it such a New York night that star musician Jamie Cullum was enlisted at the last minute–three days ago–to put together a live jazz performance medley of “New York New York” and “Empire State of Mind.” It was so good that the opening ceremony host Melanie Laurent got juror Uma Thurman to dance on stage with her, and the whole audience –including wheelchair bound director Bernardo Bertolucci and move star Faye Dunaway–clapped along.

Meantime, Woody Allen looked dazed and jet lagged. He only arrived in Cannes on Wednesday morning–because he and wife Soon Yi didn’t want to take their kids of out of school for more than three days. PS Believe it or not, Woody and Soon Yi have now logged 19 years together.
Best dressed of the night: Woody’s leading lady, Rachel McAdams; Salma Hayek in Gucci; Uma, styled by Anna Bingemann (aka Mrs. Griffin Dunne), and the amazing Grace Hightower, aka Mrs. DeNiro. Jude Law and Adrien Brody looked good, too.
