The Oscars® were no enormous shame, a few good jokes, no great shocks

I’m a big fan of Ellen DeGeneres and her understated, often brilliant humor. This was most evident when she hosted the 2001 Emmy Awards after the horrific events in New York and Washington that year. The show was postponed twice, and when it finally aired a couple of months later the big question was how it could be entertaining?
Almost from the outset Ellen delivered. To paraphrase what she said, it was something like the terrorists could not break our spirit. Then she paused and deadpanned that only network executives could do that.

It was funny, unexpected yet absolutely true. It related to the events just passed, but broke the ice and allowed the show to go on to its true purpose after the long delay.

The Oscars Rate a B-Minus.
I wish I could say Ellen’s performance last night rose to that occasion. Though it generally retained the dignity and glamour that audiences expect, something lost in last year’s show hosted by Seth MacFarlane, it was mostly bland with repetitive jokes and occasional good moments. Having said that, I cringed a bit when Ellen repeated out loud and very slowly a compliment to Nebraska supporting actress nominee June Squibb, whom Ellen had termed the oldest Oscar nominee ever, as if the actress were almost deaf and needed careful attention to hear her remarks.

Throughout the ABC show, Ellen drew from a past playbook and redid bits from the last time she hosted in 2007, often appearing in the audience, talking with this celebrity or that and taking photos. In one segment she asked if anyone was hungry, which drew very few responses and went on much too long. However, when a pizza man arrived later in the show, though only with three pizzas, it was amusing to see how many celebrities accepted a slice, including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford. And that no one initially responded to Ellen’s request for donations to pay the man.

I’d thought sometime later it would have been funny if the delivery man, denied payment, started taking back the pizza slices from Meryl, Julia and the others. However, they eventually paid the bit off when Ellen passed a hat into which producer Harvey Weinstein threw two hundred dollars and several celebrities forked over twenty or more dollars each. By my count that was over three hundred [...]

However, as the case was investigated, it was determined that no criminal activity took place, states TMZ. Brown’s girlfriend at the time, Karrueche Tran, commented during the investigation that the woman put the phone in their car and struck her on the head.
Brown allegedly later tossed the phone out of the car as it didn’t belong to them. Prosecutors reportedly determined that this was possible in the case.

Kim Kardashian claims she didn’t compare her struggles to having cancer

HollywoodNews.com: A new quote from Kim Kardashian has been released by the UK’s ‘The Guardian’ that has her apparently comparing going through a few struggles to having cancer.
However, Kim is now taking some time to explain that everything was taken out of context as that wasn’t what she meant, states Hollyscoop. The original quote read, “I spoke to a girl today who had cancer and we were talking about how this is such a hard thing for her, but it taught her a big lesson on who her friends are and so much about life. She’s 18. And I was like, ‘that’s how I feel.’”
What Kim really meant is what she said on her blog, “She told me how her life had completely changed when she was diagnosed, and a lot of friends had deserted her, which is something I said I could relate to. In no way was I comparing my own experiences to that of a cancer patient. I was merely talking about how there are times in your life, and everyone goes through them, when you find out who loves you enough to stand by you through thick and thin.”
What do you think about Kim’s explanation?

Topless Kate Middleton pictures published by French magazine

HollywoodNews.com: The French magazine ‘Closer’ better watch out for the Royal Family because they have published topless pictures of Kate Middleton that were taken by paparazzi while she was vacationing with Prince William at a private home.
The pictures were taken while Kate was with William in France at a chateau owned by the Queen’s nephew, Lord Linley, states TMZ. Kate was photographed with her bikini top off while at the private house.
The Royal Family has issued a serious statement: “Their royal highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner.”
“Their royal highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them. Officials acting on behalf of their royal highnesses are consulting with lawyers to consider what options may be available to the Duke and Duchess,” the statement continued.
The French magazine does have a UK version, but the publication did not publish the pictures and released a statement against the act: “[T]he comments made by the Editor of the French edition which have reported in the media today do not reflect the opinions of Closer magazine UK. Closer magazine UK takes its obligations under the PCC Code extremely seriously and would never publish topless images of a member of the Royal family on its cover or otherwise.”
What do you think about these pictures being taken and published?

Kristen Stewart: Why is “On the Road” opening everywhere but the U.S.A.?

HollywoodNews.com: By the time the film version of the quintessential American novel, “On the Road,” opens in America, it will be the movie’s very last stop. The Walter Salles directed adaptation of the famed Jack Kerouac classic has already opened in four countries. It will open in two dozen more before it finally hits American theaters on December 21, 2012. A movie about being lost in America is lost in distribution.
Indeed, “On the Road” is so screwed up at this point that it had its UK premiere in London three days ago. But it doesn’t actually open there until October 12th. Neither of its big stars–Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund–even showed up for that premiere. It’s not clear what the point was at all.
The movie had its worldwide debut back in May at the Cannes Film Festival. Critics were lukewarm. Rottentomatoes.com has given it a 40% score, with pretty much everyone checking in. In the four countries where it has played to audiences, “On the Road” has a total box office of just over $4.2 million.
Now it will roll out in spurts around the world. In early September, “On the Road” will get a premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. It almost seems like an afterthought since it won’t be released in the U.S. for three more months. There’s no momentum whatsoever marketing wise.
What a shame. “On the Road” was published in 1957. The saga of its journey to film is a long, storied one. Francis Ford Coppola tried to do in the 1990s. Casts came and went. Salles, a very good director, made such a success of “The Motorcycle Diaries,” that he seemed like a good choice. But something went wrong in the translation.
“On the Road” also now comes with a little unwanted baggage. Kristen Stewart, who’s a minor part of the film, has been played up as one its stars. But this summer she earned a scarlet “A” for her affair with the married director of her “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Rarher than be stoned in public, Stewart skipped the throwaway UK premiere. Her level of promo participation in the future is unknown.
