Britney Spears is set to launch a multi-platform campaign

HollywoodNews.com: Britney Spears is set to launch a multi-platform campaign of her eagerly awaited video, “I Wanna Go.” This Sunday Spears will simultaneously air an exclusive 30-second teaser on Bravo’s popular “Watch What Happens: Live ” and on VEVO. The teaser leads up to the full video premiere on MTV and VEVO on Wednesday the 22nd. Following the premiere the video will air hourly on MTV, during video hours, and on VH-1′s Best Morning Buzz Live.
The video was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero and shot in Los Angeles. The “I Wanna Go” video comes on the heels of her highly-anticipated Femme Fatale tour in Sacramento yesterday. Spears was warmly received by a sell-out crowd and high praise from critics: Rolling Stone raves that “the night belonged to Britney” and that it was “possibly her flashiest, fastest moving, and most entertaining production yet.” The Sacramento Bee adds “Spears performed like a pro throughout the show” and that the “sellout crowd thrilled… from the start to Spear’s stellar pop songs.” Spears’ Femme Fatale Tour with special guest Nicki Minaj, Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo next tour date is June 18th in San Jose at the HP Pavilion and is slated to wrap on August 25th in Raleigh, NC before heading off to Europe.
“I Wanna Go” (click to listen) is the third single from Spears’ platinum selling 7th studio-album Femme Fatale (Jive Records) and was produced by Shellback, Savan Kotecha and long-time collaborator Max Martin.

Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Nikki Minaj on album to aide Japan

HollywoodNews.com: Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Nikki Minaj and more are teaming up to create an album that will have the proceeds going to the Japanese Red Cross to aide the victims of the earthquake and tsunami.
Universal Music is reportedly putting the digital-only album together, states RadarOnline.com. The album will only be digital because that will make the process faster as the company is hoping to have it available this week.
“My prayers go out to them. We all need to help, by being one of the first on board for the project,” Bieber wrote about wanting to be involved.
Will you buy the album?

Is Paula Abdul Joining Simon Cowell at “X Factor”?”

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: Big headline this morning that Simon Cowell’s talking to Paula Abdul about joining “X Factor.” In fact, I told you last August 9th that this was already in the works. Cowell always planned on Paula being the “X Factor” in his judge panel. A high up at Sony told me that last fall.
And that’s because the whole rivalry between “X Factor” and “American Idol” falls into a war between Universal Music Group, which now has the recording deals for “AI,” and Sony Music, which has “X Factor.” Steven Tyler, who records for Sony and judges for “AI,” is the exception, but he’s not an active recording artist for Sony. Jennifer Lopez, who’s debuting her new video on “AI,” is with UMG. Mariah Carey, therefore, is not likely to be on a Sony panel; that’s her ex-record company. Indeed, “X Factor” has lots of Sony artists to promote.
And when Doug Morris, the new head of Sony and ex chief of UMG, starts work July 1st, I am sure he will be right in there with suggestions. I would say the bigger question is who will be Simon’s third judge? And knowing Simon, who’s the PT Barnum of our time, he will tease out many names between now and September. But trust me, he already knows the winner’s names.

First look at Jimmy Eat World’s “My Best Theory” video

HollywoodNews.com: Jimmy Eat World has released two video stills from their upcoming video “My Best Theory,” off their highly anticipated album, Invented. Lead singer, Jim Adkins had this to say about the song and the video, “The song is about finding your individuality in a world where extremes are more and more presented as your only option. We thought taking a science fiction approach would be a great way to demonstrate breaking free of what may be expected from an individual. We loved director Ron Winter’s work and thought he was the perfect choice to help.” The video premieres this Friday, September 24th on Vevo.

Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler confirmed as “American Idol” judges

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: It’s official. Pop sensation Jennifer Lopez and rock icon Steven Tyler will sit at the judge’s table when “American Idol” launches next season.
Fox confirmed the news minutes ago. Here’s the release:
Golden Globe-nominated actress, platinum-selling recording artist, movie producer and entrepreneur Jennifer Lopez and multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steven Tyler, the frontman of Aerosmith – the best-selling American rock band of all time – have joined AMERICAN IDOL as judges. Lopez and Tyler will join returning IDOL judge Randy Jackson for the 10th anniversary season, which premieres January 2011 on FOX.
In addition, Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, co-founder of Beats Audio and one of the world’s most successful and prolific music producers, will join AMERICAN IDOL as an in-house mentor. Throughout the season, IDOL will go behind-the-scenes to feature Iovine working with and lending his expertise to the contestants as they compete to become the next American Idol. As part of Universal Music Group’s long-term alliance with AMERICAN IDOL, Interscope Geffen A&M will market, promote and distribute albums globally from AMERICAN IDOL finalists and winning contestants across a broad array of retail and new media platforms.
“For nine years I’ve enjoyed watching artists compete to get a meaningful chance to achieve their dreams,” said Lopez. “I know from my own experience how hard it is to succeed, and I’m looking forward to discovering and nurturing that spirit in the many AMERICAN IDOL contestants I look forward to meeting this year.”
“I’ve been on tour for most of my life in a band with four guys who judge me every day. Sometimes it hurt, but it only made me stronger,” said Tyler. “I want to give everybody a little love before I decide who goes home heartbroken. If you don’t like what I say, don’t get mad, get better. I’m ready to bring some rock to this ‘roller’ coaster and show these kids if they have the dream, the talent and the drive, they will be the next American Idol.”
“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years of the greatest show in the world,” said Jackson. “I am looking forward to this next season; we are going to knock it out of the park. Season 10 is going to be hot!”
“We are all thrilled to have Interscope Geffen A&M now be the distributor for AMERICAN IDOL’s music,” said Iovine. [...]

‘American Idol’ moves to Universal

HollywoodNews.com: With all the changes going on at ‘American Idol,’ it seems only fitting that the music rights would change owners as well.
According to MTV, Sony is no longer going to “promote and distribute ‘Idol’ artists’ albums,” as Universal Music Group has been hired to do so. As the show moves into its 10th season, creator Simon Fuller “wants to inject some new power and weight” behind the ‘Idol’ brand.

Ne-Yo to release two new songs with long form videos

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: The big buzz in the R&B world today is that Ne Yo, the 30 year old junior soul man, is releasing two new songs with long form videos.
This afternoon at 6pm, BET is premiering the videos for “Champagne Life” and “Beautiful Monster” on its “106 and Park” show. The videos also go up on Vevo.
Isaw the videos yesterday and even ran into Ne Yo (real name Shaffer Smith) up at Universal Music, where the entire staff of Def Jam was crowded into a conference room to hear his whole new album, “Libra Scale.” The album gets released on September 21st, nine days before the Grammy deadline. As with Ne Yo’s last CD, this one looks headed for a Best Album nomination.
Ne Yo likens the two videos–which clock in around 8 minutes apiece–to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” (Michael, whom we affectionately call Jacko in headlines because it’s short and snappy, folks.) And there’s a sci fi element to the story line, which will play out in at least three more videos to songs from “Libra Scale.”
But Ne Yo is more like Marvin Gaye in this sense: he writes and plays everything. There’s no sampling or “interpolating” (the latter is my favorite word now on albums where old songs are remade anew with new titles).

Justin Bieber may be L.A. Reid’s saving ticket

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: The word is starting up again at Island Def Jam Records: L.A. Reid, they say, may be on his way out.
Listen, no one criticized L.A. Reid more almost a decade ago when he took over Arista Records. He had a rocky start. that’s for sure.
But Reid’s promotion from running LaFace Records to Arista and then to Island Def Jam has shown him to be a mature, decisive record man. Losing him now would be a mistake for Island Def Jam and Universal Music Group.
The rumors emanate now because Lucian Grainge has come to the US from Universal International to run UMG. He’s a music man but he’s looking at the bottom line. And in the music biz these days, it just doesn’t look good. It doesn’t help that Grainge was described in Billboard earlier this year as a “killer shark.”

Warner Music is destined to remain the industry joke

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: I’ve got to say, reading Peter Lauria’s account of Fred Goodman’s new book about Warner Music, even I thought I must have been wrong.
The book is “Fortune’s Fool,” and apparently, according to the usually astute Lauria, Edgar Bronfman, Jr. is the man who saved the record business. Lauria falls all over himself to endorse Goodman’s thesis: that Bronfman is a genius who should be apologized to now since he’s also a pioneer and seer.
As they say on the inter-web: OMG. That nothing could be farther from the truth is an understatement. That two journalists fell for it makes it all the worse.
Warner Music in its current incarnation is an industry joke. In the five and a half years that they’ve had the company, Bronfman and Lyor Cohen have developed no artists. They’ve relied solely on artists who were signed before they bought the company. The few one-off surprise hits they’ve had — no follow up. Take poor James Blunt, who will be singing “You’re Beautiful” for the rest of his life, or Gnarls Barkley, still “Crazy” after all these years.
WMG has also managed to lose Madonna, Nickelback, and Paul Simon–the latter not a bestseller anymore but a prestige act who should have been cultivated. Green Day, Linkin Park, Eric Clapton, Josh Groban, Faith Hill, and Michael Buble–all were there well before Bronfman and friends.
For five years the charts have reflected the truth about WMG: a few scattered hits from Craig Kallman at Atlantic Records. But the name Warner Records no longer appears on hits. I know this is very old school, but a successful record company is indicated by HITS-not by layoffs and cutting staff to the bone. Clive Davis and Doug Morris can turn on the radio and hear their HITS from, respectively, Arista/J and Universal Music groups. Edgar Bronfman cannot say that.
Every year for five years WMG stock price has dropped into the abyss. Each quarter, Bronfman gets on a conference call with analysts and answers questions about “possible changes in the digital market” or some such nonsense. He also promises that the “schedule is backloaded” so that the big hits are in the fourth quarter. As usual, we’re waiting:
Last week the charts were dominated by Universal/Interscope, Universal/A&M, Arista, Capitol, and Columbia. And the punchline there is that Capitol is, like, non functioning. Despite constantly teetering on the edge of EMI and Terra Firma’s collapse, [...]

Amy Winehouse cleans up her image thanks to new boyfriend

HollywoodNews.com: Turns out Amy Winehouse’ s new boyfriend Reg Traviss is a bit of a Professor Higgins.
The British Media has been praising the guy as the catalyst which has cleaned up Winehouse completely in recent weeks. The soul singer has apparently given up drinking, drugs and smoking.
Winehouse’s best friend Sam Shaker tells U.K.’s The Sun, “She is totally transformed. I am so proud of her. She has stopped drinking and even stopped smoking completely. Reg has sorted her out. She drank virgin Marys all night, not a single alcoholic drink.
“Even last week she was drinking sangrias but I told her how proud I was and she says she is the happiest she has ever been. He’s made a new person of her. He is a civilized man, a gentleman. She is so blissful and has turned herself around for him. She said she has new music coming out soon and she will be fit and healthy to promote it.”
The couple were spotted at a star-studded party thrown by Universal Music exec LUCIAN GRAINGE at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London.
The Sun marvels, “It’s the best she’s looked for ages. Here’s hoping this relationship lasts.”
