Veronica Mars Film Coming Next Summer

30,000 people donated an average of $64 during a several hour period yesterday, and thus we will be getting a Veronica Mars movie sometime next summer.
Creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell used Kickstarter to basically prove to Warner Bros. that there is indeed an interest in a continuation of the cult detective drama that ran for three low-rated seasons on the CW back in 2004-2007.
The deal was basically to raise $2 million in a month and Warner Bros. would agree to distribute and market the film, giving it a limited theatrical release and the various home-viewing options. They hit their target at 5:55 pm this evening. I made a bitchy joke earlier in the day about raising money to find domestic ‘food insecurity’ among American children by calling such an initiative ‘Save Firefly!’ or something to that effect. My first instincts were ones of priorities and what this said about our ‘entitlement culture’. Upon reflection (I purposely didn’t write anything immediately), I’m still not sure how I feel about this. This is indeed very interesting, it may even be *news*. But is it good news overall.

Christopher Nolan’s “INTERSTELLAR” will be co-produced and distributed by Paramount Picts and Warner Bros

Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures jointly announced today that writer/director Christopher Nolan’s “INTERSTELLAR” will be co-produced and distributed by the two studios, with Paramount Pictures handling Domestic distribution and Warner Bros. Pictures distributing the film Internationally. “INTERSTELLAR” will be released beginning November 7, 2014, in theaters and IMAX®.
Directed and written by Academy Award-nominee Nolan (“INCEPTION,” “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES”), “INTERSTELLAR” is based on a script by Jonathan Nolan. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan of Syncopy Films and Obst of Lynda Obst Productions. Kip Thorne will executive produce. The film will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding.
Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures said, “As a filmmaker and storyteller, Chris has continuously entertained the world with his extraordinary and unparalleled talents. I am pleased beyond measure to welcome him to the Paramount Pictures family. Delaying the inevitable – “Jack the Giant Slayer”

As most of you know, Warner Bros. intended to release Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer in June of 2012 before pulling it from release, ordering reshoots and the like, and calling it a more kid-friendly Jack the Giant Slayer.
I don’t know what the film’s budget was prior to the date change and related reshoots, but it was probably a lot less than the $195 million that they ended up with. And for what? The film opened this weekend to $28 million.
If patterns hold for this kind of release, it’ll likely top out at $70 million domestic at best and around $250 million worldwide as a best case scenario. But point being, how much better of an opening could Warner Bros. expecting for a half kid-friendly/half dark-and-violent retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk starring absolutely no one of any box office worth? How much worse of an opening would Warner Bros. be looking at had it just gone ahead and opened it in June of 2012 as they intended?
Is it really worth the extra tens-of-millions of dollars that they ended up spending on the picture? Delaying the inevitable oftentimes merely gets you the same result at a greater cost.

‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ has actual movie stars

There are $200 million fantasy spectaculars opening within two weeks of each other at the moment. If the $400,000 10pm/midnight figures for Jack the Giant Slayer is any indication, Warner Bros. is about to have its very own John Carter/Battleship ($25 million debut, $65 million finish, around $250 million worldwide at best). Conversely Walt Disney has let the embargo wall fall for its Sam Raimi-helmed Oz: The Great and Powerful, which is allegedly tracking to open at around $75 million.
There are a number of reasons why Sam Raimi’s fairy tale-redux is prime to perform better than Bryan Singer’s such attempt. For one thing, I can take my daughter to the one that isn’t PG-13 and doesn’t involve giants biting peoples’ heads off and/or setting them on fire.
Also helping is the strength and confidence of Disney’s marketing versus Warner’s “we know we laid a financial egg” trepidation. But perhaps most importantly, Oz: The Great and Powerful has actual movie stars. What? I thought the era of the movie star was gone and the proverbial movie star was a relic of a bygone era? Well… it’s actually only half-true.

“Argo” on its way to Oscar – Ben Affleck

The winners of the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards for 2012 were announced tonight during the 65th Annual DGA Awards Dinner at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles. Ben Affleck won the DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for Argo.
Director/producer/actor Kelsey Grammer hosted the ceremony before an audience of more than 1,600 guests. “Skyfall” topped the box office in its fifth weekend

The decision by Warner Bros. to move The Gangster Squad (trailer) to January, 2013 and Universal’s choice to move Les Miserables from next weekend to Christmas day should have caused a giant game of musical chairs. It didn’t, and now we have the second December weekend in a row (with one more to come) with just a single new release). Meanwhile the last two weekends of the year are going to be jam-packed with major films (Jack Reacher, This Is Forty, DJango Unchained, The Guilt Trip, etc.), all of which could have *easily* topped the box office and/or dominated the competition had they opened this weekend or last weekend. But weekends that are barren of new releases save for a Gerald Butler vehicle tend to be very boring box office weekends indeed.
But this weekend saw but a single half-hearted new release, a Gerald Butler rom-com that once again proves that Butler is only a movie star when he has a bigger co-star beside him. And while Jessica Biel may be a better actress than the mainstream material she gets offered would attest, she ain’t Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Anniston (or Jamie Foxx for that matter). Play For Keeps debuted with $6 million this weekend. The film earned a B+ from Cinemascore while playing 57% female and 74% over 25 years old. Forgive me if no one cares, save to feel bad for the careers of Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Judy Greer as they are forced to play desperate soccer moms who just can’t resist Mr. Butler. 300 was a long time ago, and it’s tough to be a movie star when your break-out role renders you unrecognizable. He’ll continue to work because the industry still thinks the man who killed Joel Schumacher’s Phantom of the Opera (he can’t sing, he really can’t sing) is a next wave movie star. But I think it’s time to call time-of-death on Butler’s alleged movie stardom.

Amy Adams will be given the “Hollywood Supporting Actress Award” for her performance in “THE MASTER”

HollywoodNews.com: The 16th Annual Hollywood Film Awards, presented by the Los Angeles Times, is pleased to announce that three-time Academy Award nominated actress, Amy Adams will be given the “Hollywood Supporting Actress Award” for her performance in “THE MASTER”; editor Dylan Tichenor, A.C.E., will receive the “Hollywood Editor Award”; and production designer Sarah Greenwood, A.D.G., will be given the “Hollywood Production Designer Award.”
“We are very proud to recognize the films and work of this talented actress and accomplished artists,” said Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Awards.
The 2012 Hollywood Film Awards has also announced that it will honor director David O. Russell with the “Hollywood Director Award,” Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro with the “Hollywood Supporting Actor Award,” Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard with the “Hollywood Actress Award,” producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner with the “Hollywood Producers Award,” writer/director Judd Apatow with the “Hollywood Comedy Award,” actor John Hawkes with the “Hollywood Breakout Performance Award” for “The Sessions,” and Quvenzhané Wallis with the “New Hollywood Award” for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” Other honorees include cinematographer Wally Pfister and visual effects supervisors Janek Sirrs and Jeff White. In addition, director Peter Ramsey’s “Rise of the Guardians” will be honored with the “Hollywood Animation Award,” along with additional honorees to be announced in the coming weeks.
The Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on October 22, 2012. The event honors cherished stars and up-and-coming talent, and traditionally kicks off the film awards season with the biggest stars and top industry executives in attendance.
 
“We are very appreciative to be the first stop of the awards season. In the last nine years, a total of 85 Oscar nominations and 32 Oscars were given to the honorees of the Hollywood Film Awards,” said de Abreu.
 
Last year’s awards show reached a total TV audience of more than 41 million media impressions, in addition to more than 300 million online and print readers’ impressions.
 
Aside from celebrating accomplishments on screen, the Hollywood Film Awards established the “Hollywood Gives Back” program to expand and continue highlighting and assisting important local and national charities to raise funds. Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” exits the Oscar race – ANALYSIS

Hollywoodnews.com: Once the awards season gets underway (which annually happens right around this time), we spend a decent amount of our time separating the titles with Oscar potential from the titles with simple Oscar hopes. Usually, this requires a screening of the film, we can judge its awards potential on merit. But every once in a while, a studio makes the decision for us by removing a particular movie out of the Oscar heat, for various reasons.
That appears to be what has happened with Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” which officially moved its release date from the Oscar-friendly Dec. 25 to an undisclosed date in Summer 2013, according to a Warner Bros. release.
“Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures.
In one sense, “Gatsby” is getting away from some very stiff competition. Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and Seth Rogen’s “The Guilt Trip” were set to open on that day. They also are arriving in theaters one week after Paramount’s “Jack Reacher” (with Tom Cruise), Judd Apatow’s “This is 40,” and Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Hunt for Osama Bin Laden thriller.
“Gatsby” also would be competing for Oscar eyeballs against “Les Miserables” (Dec. 14), Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” (Dec. 14), and Focus Features’ “Hyde Park on the Hudson” (in limited release on Dec. 7).
So “Gatsby” is out of this year’s Oscar race, where a colleague and I recently argued it would compete for technical nominations, at the very least, and the big prizes – Picture, Director, Actor and so on – if it connected on all levels.
And the race rolls on.
