The man behind the language of “Avatar”
BBC reports that almost four years ago, University of Southern California’s linguistics expert Professor Paul Frommer was sent an email from James Cameron’s production department pitching a project titled “project 880.” They were looking for “a linguist that would be able to help him develop an alien language.”
Professor Frommer was able to convince Cameron that he was the right man for the job in a mere 90 minute meeting. Cameron’s instructions were to give the Na’vi language an authentic but exotic feel that human actors could still be comfortable pronouncing and articulating.
