Joe McElderry takes #1 spot on UK singles chart

BBC reports that Joe McElderry, who won the latest “X Factor” has beat out Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing In The Name,” to become the number one single of the New Year on the UK singles chart. McElderry’s “The Climb” has sold 196,000 copies in the last week beating “Killing in the Name” by over 180,000.

Currently, Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” is still at the top for the biggest selling single of the year coming in with 870,000 copies sold over the past year, but McElderry is still trying to beat this. He currently stands at 650,000 copies sold over the past year, but has only until January 1 to beat the record.
