Johnny Depp is out, but Ewan McGregor is in Gilliam’s “Quixote” Johnny Depp will no longer be headlining Terry Gilliam’s long-gestating passion project “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” rather Ewan McGregor will be taking the lead.

Film is expected to start lensing in September. Depp will be unavailable then because he’ll still be sailing on a ship for Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean 4.”

Gilliam has been attempting to make a Don Quixote film for several years. The IFC documentary “Lost in La Mancha” documents how the director’s first production, which cost $35 million, was cursed by flash floods and other abnormalities.
His most recent version will have a pricetag of $20 million.

As scooped by Empire Online, McGregor will play a 21st centuary ad exec who is transported back to 17th century Spain where he meets the legendary character who jousts windmills. Robert Duvall is slotted to play Quixote.

“Robert Duvall is one of the greats, no question – and he can ride a horse!” laughed Gilliam to Empire. “And Ewan has gotten better over the years. He was wonderful in ‘The Ghost.’ There’s a lot of colours to Ewan that he’s not been showing recently and it’s time for him to show them again. He’s got a great sense of humour and he’s a wonderful actor. He’s wonderfully boyish and can be charming – when he flashes a smile, everybody melts. He wields it like a nuclear bomb!”
