Anna Kendrick in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”

By Tracy Rosenfield Anna Kendrick, who plays Bella’s classmate and sometimes-friend, Jessica, in “The Twilight Saga”, will star alongside Michael Cera in a fantasy-based teenage superhero comedy, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comics. Scott (Cera), a jobless bassist, falls for Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the girl of his dreams. However, in order to win her heart, he must defeat her seven evil exes ranging from crazy identical twins to a rock star, all with supernatural powers.

Kendrick, starring as Scott’s sister, Stacey, appears to play the voice of reason in the trailers, but uses her usual snarky attitude to make her point. In a tete-a-tete conversation with Scott, Stacey condescendingly says “Next time we don’t date the girl with eleven evil ex-boyfriends.” Scott corrects her in that it’s “seven”, to which Stacey replies. “Well, that’s not that bad.”
Anna Kendrick plays the comic relief in “The Twilight Saga”, a dramatic fantasy, and in “Up in the Air”, a drama. Though she’s also been in a dark comedy (Camp) and a dramedy (Rocket Science), the question remains as to whether Kendrick can hold her own as a comedic figure in a full-out comedy (with some superhero action mixed in)?

She’s already been nominated for her work in “Up in the Air,” so there is no doubt about Anna’s acting ability. Actors have often said that comedy is the hardest genre to perform because it has to come across naturally and Anna has proven she can more than handle it. Let’s see how it plays out when she is surrounded by an entire comedic cast.

“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” hits theaters on August 13th and you can watch a sneak peak tonight during the MTV Movie Awards.
