“The Real L Word” — Love it or Hate it?

By Malina Saval

HollywoodNews.com : To give you an idea of how few the cable TV offerings were last night, I found myself on a couch, spoon deep in a pint of Starbucks coffee ice cream, with my husband, watching the Valentine’s Day episode of the new reality show “The Real L Word.” I was actually really excited when the show premiered, because I’d been a huge fan of “The L Word,” its fictional predecessor (and interviewed show creator Ilene Chaiken for an article). I’m not a lesbian, but I’m game for any good melodrama, and The L Word had it all—cheating, scandal, lies, money, amazing clothes. But in all these areas “The Real L Word” falls flat. The stars aren’t half as pretty, the clothes aren’t anywhere near as pricey, and none of the characters, as of yet, are all that likable. Plus, there isn’t much relationship drama because the girls are all so ridiculously understanding of one another. In its favor, at its best the characters get catty, which is fun to watch, and there’s one couple about to get married that is so off-the-charts happy it’s damn near hysterical. For their valentine’s day each one gifted the other with more presents than the average kid gets at Christmas. There’s no way any guy, no matter how chivalrous, would have given his girlfriend or wife as many gifts. The cards, the little notes tucked into boxes of chocolates, the surprise massages–It went on and on.Not to mention the fact that one of the women looks like a transvestite. I found myself laughing out loud into my container of ice cream. My husband was dying. OK, I lied about what I said at the beginning of all this about the show being a bore. I’m kind of hooked. What about you? Have you tuned in?
