The Top 10… Movies of 2010, Thus Far Having recently passed the halfway point of 2010, I thought it would be an appropriate time to offer a list of the top 10 films of the year, thus far, based on a combination of my personal views and the general consensus of the critical community. As others have noted, it hasn’t been as strong a first-half as even last year, which wasn’t all that strong itself, so it’s probable that only one or two of these films will also appear on the Academy’s top 10 list (aka the list of the best picture nominees) shortly after the end of the year.

1. "Inception" (7/16)

Picture 10 of 10

Christopher Nolan followed up his critically and commercially beloved "The Dark Knight" with this mind-bending thriller about the manipulation of dreams, which hits theaters this Friday but was screened by this writer on July 2. Audiences will probably check it out in large numbers because of its star-studded cast, which is headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and Tom Berenger. Many will be surprised by and perhaps struggle with its complex, multi-layered plot, not to mention its long runtime, but those who buy into and can keep up with it will probably side with the majority of critics, who have already strongly embraced it.
