Idris Elba may play James Patterson’s famous Alex Cross

By Sean O’Connell Fans of James Patterson’s best-selling detective novels featuring Washington, D.C. sleuth Alex Cross couldn’t have been too happy when Morgan Freeman assumed the role for “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider” — roughly 10 years past the time when he would have been right for the part.

But new news should have Patterson’s faithful readers smiling once again.

Idris Elba, so brilliant in “The Wire” and on “The Office,” will assume the lead role in David Twohy’s adaptation on Patterson’s “Cross,” according to Deadline.

That’s one of Cross’s latest adventures, and finds the investigator tracking a killer named The Butcher – who might be responsible for murdering Cross’s wife.

We’ve never seen Alex Cross’s wife on screen. We’d also be skipping the detective’s stint with the FBI. But then again, “Girls” and “Spider” were so far off the tone of Patterson’s excellent novels, a franchise reboot with Elba in the lead might be just what the character needs.

“Cross” reportedly will begin filming next spring.
