Will Ferrell sits on sidelines with sports films, dreams of soccer comedy
HollywoodNews.com: After bombing with his last sports-themed comedy 2008’s “Semi Pro” ($33.4 million at the domestic B.O.), Will Ferrell has made a personal vow that he won’t be making any more.
“The Other Guys” star has churned out other sports comedies which have been $100 million-plus hits, i.e. “Talladega Nights” (NASCAR racing) and “Blades of Glory” (ice skating).
However, Ferrell is careful about the next step he takes on the field with the sub-genre — even if wants to make a film about soccer.
“When I was 10 I wrote an essay saying I would be a pro soccer player and a comedian in the off season. I have this label in the States so I have a self-imposed moratorium. But maybe we could lift it,” says Ferrell to The Sun.
But here’s the kicker: Ferrell has already made a soccer laffer — “Kicking and Screaming.” In the Universal film, he plays a little league soccer coach. It was released during the summer of 2005 to middling results ($52.8 million).
