Superman’s super-powered foe will be …

By Sean O’Connell So Superman officially has a villain.

Though it has been rumored for some time that the Man of Steel would face off against General Zod in Zack Snyder’s planned Superman reboot, Warner Bros. confirmed the news Sunday, even going so far as to announce that Michael Shannon, an Oscar nominees for his intense work in Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road,” would play the conniving villain.

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman others don’t,” Snyder said in the release. “Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Superman fans may remember that Terrence Stamp played Zod in “Superman II,” though it’s likely Snyder will go to great lengths to distance itself from the earlier cuts of “Superman” and make Zod a truly unique character.

“Superman: The Man of Steel” stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. It will be in theaters in December 2012.
