“American Idol” contestant Scotty McCreery: a one-trick pony?

American Idol Cast

By Kim Palacios

hollywoodnews.com: Can “American Idol” contestant Scotty McCreery sing in any style other than country? Whereas most “Idol” contestants are encouraged to break out of their comfort zone, McCreery has stuck to his guns. In lieu of choosing songs and diction that might make him more accessible to a wide set of viewers, McCreery routinely rejects the masses and panders to his base.

It might not be a bad strategy—male contestants have enjoyed a historical advantage, as do those from the southern United States. And, the judges seem to praise whatever McCreery sings.

But there seems to be a double-standard. Contestants like Thia Megia and even Pia Toscana were advised to show their range after sticking to the same types of songs. Meanwhile, McCreery rendered Elton John and Stevie Wonder songs unrecognizable without reproach.

I think the girls were encouraged to change it up to show some personality. Scotty has a personality no matter what he sings. He has a deep voice and country accent sohe is going to sound country.

He is a country singer! He has left the country genre a couple of times and he performed very well. I for one am happy that these kids are sticking to what they feel defines them as artist/performer. I think they are brave for staying as true to themselves as they can in a competition like this. I’m glad they are not giving in to a lot of the usual negative commits by press as well as bitter people. Why is it that so many people love to see others fail, it’s like an epidemic in our country. I enjoy the show every week and the performances by all the contestants and have for weeks. I plan on attending a performance of the Idol Tour just so I can see them all again and see how they mix so many styles. Embrace the variety, vote for your favorite, simple as that.
