Pedro Almodovar guest Artistic Director for AFI Fest 2011 – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell Pedro Almodovar has a rich history with AFI Fest, the American Film Institute’s annual film event held each November in Hollywood. Eight of the director’s films have screened at AFI over the years. So it makes sense that the fest would choose to honor his career with a retrospective, and select Almodovar to serve as this year’s Guest Artistic Director.

“Pedro Almodóvar is a modern master,” AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said. “His genius inspires artists and audiences alike, and it is an honor for the American Film Institute to celebrate him and his singular voice at AFI FEST.”

As part of the celebration, Almodovar will preside over a 25th anniversary screening of his “Law of Desire.” In addition, the director will program a sidebar of titles that he claims have inspired him over the years and informed his work. Those films will be named in October.

This year’s AFI Fest will run Nov. 3-10 in Hollywood. Almodovar is on the fall film festival circuit himself with “The Skin I Live In,” which played Cannes and is preparing to screen at festivals in Toronto and New York. Now, the IMDB page also says Telluride, even though that information is supposed to be under lock and key. Wishful thinking or an Internet blunder? We’ll see soon enough.

Best director ever. He is my absolute favorite. I love the “usual suspects” he casts in his films, as well! Makes me want to dig into my DVD collection and start watching.
