Johnny Depp, Tim Burton confirm cast for “Dark Shadows”

By Sean O’Connell Tim Burton has filled out the cast for his “Dark Shadows” update, including some fresh names and an actress we all could have assumed would find her way into the film at some point.

Jonny Lee Miller and Chloe Moretz have been cast alongside Johnny Depp in the horror-thriller, which begins shooting at Pinewood Studios, THR reports. In addition, Burton’s wife (and frequent collaborator) Helena Bonham Carter officially has been confirmed as a member of the ensemble.

Burton’s film is an adaptation of a cult TV show that’s a favorite of both he and Depp. It reportedly casts the “Sweeney Todd” star as “self-loathing vampire” Barnabas Collins, who “returns to his human roots in search of his lost love.” Early reports also have the vamp interacting with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts, so we understand why the material appeals to Burton.

The director already had cast Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Bella Heathcote and Jackie Earle Haley, though this will be Depp’s show. Everyone else in Burton’s productions end up being window dressing to his beloved star and longtime creative partner.

THR says “Dark Shadows” will shoot entirely in the UK. Warner Bros. plans to release it May 11, 2012.

You’re quite very late with most of this news, Sean. The cast was announced months ago, and filming started at Pinewood Studios in London at the beginning of June. This news has been all over the Internet for months. Been in hiberation?? Principal filming is now complete, and Johnny Depp has been on vacation with his family on his yacht for the past week or so. By the way, please check your spelling of “Sweeny” in your article. The correct spelling is “Sweeney Todd.”

Half of that cast had been announced, DLH. Miller and Moretz are new additions. And what is your source on shooting? Sources have told us Burton’s just getting underway. Can you confirm? I’d love to follow up.

Oddly enough, Sean, I just typed and tried to post a long comment giving you many links to prove to you that the addition of Moretz and Miller are not new cast additions, and also to prove to you that Dark Shadows started filming in June and was finishing up at the end of August. When I clicked on “Submit” my comment disappeared! I find that very strange – when I posted the first comment, it appeared immediately at the bottom of your article. You asked me for proof, and I’ve got proof, but if I can’t post the comments, then you nor anyone else is going to see it.

Johnny Depp attended the Cannes Film Festival the last week of May to promote the fourth Pirates movie which was screened on a Saturday. The following day, Sunday, he was on a plane to London to begin working on Dark Shadows which began filming the first week of June. Recently, he has been photographed on vacation with his family on their yacht off the coast of the South of France. Dark Shadows was to finish filming near the end of August.

Sean, if you would like me to provide links from Internet articles from June through August that include interviews with various members of the Dark Shadows cast as they talk about being involved in filming at Pinewood Studios in London, I can do so. I also have an article from July of an interview with Patti Smith who was in London and visited Johnny on the set of Dark Shadows so she would watch him work. I have an article from early June about an old fishing boat that was purchased and taken to Pinewood Studios to be used as a prop in the movie. I have an interview with Eva Green dated 6/10/11 where she talks about heading to the set of Dark Shadows in a few days to begin filming her role. I have an article dated 7/4/11 that includes photos of the Collinswood Manor set nearing completion. In July at ComicCon in San Diego it was announced that several of the original cast members of the Dark Shadows TV show, including Jonathan Frid, had already been to Pinewood Studios in London and completed filming cameos for the movie. On July 25th, there was a local Internet article in London that reported that Johnny Depp and crew were rumored to be filming some outdoor scenes in Beckenham Place Park. As it turned out, Johnny wasn’t there, but they had a bunch of extras there and were doing some filming. On 8/8/11, the L.A. Times ran an Internet article with an interview with Kathryn Leigh Scott, one of the original cast members of Dark Shadows, who talked about having been to London to film a cameo for the movie.

Here’s a quote from Helena Bonham Carter from an interview done on 6/11/11 and posted on She says that filming has just started.

You’re on the set of “Dark Shadows” now, How’s that been going?

It’s only just started. We’re gently getting into it and that’s the ’70s, I just suddenly thought I know this period and funny enough, the woman who made all the film for “Toast” and how to do a lemon meringue pie is doing all the food on “Dark Shadows.” In fact, she taught me how to do pies on “Sweeney Todd,” so Katherine Tidy is responsible for all my cooking in every single film. She was cooking the breakfast because we have a few dinner scenes in this.

I have three Internet articles dated in March, 2011 announcing Chloe Moretz as having joined the cast of Dark Shadows. This is not “new” news as you stated. My articles are from Variety, Collider and UpAndComing.

I have one article dated in May, 2011 announcing that Jonny Lee Miller would be joining the cast of Dark Shadows. It’s from DigitalSpy. Also not “new” news as you stated.

I posted the links to those articles in a comment which is “under review” and hasn’t appeared here, most likely because it has the actual links to the articles.

Good job DLH for correcting the information in this article. It is just unfortunate critics don’t do any research on their own and just rely on other erroneous articles.
