A one of a kind spectacle is showcased in the Final Trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War”

On Friday, Marvel dropped a Trailer that I literally decided was worth taking the weekend to fully process. Of course, we’re talking about the Final Trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, which ends another phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it’s much more than that. It’s a one of a kind event that could end up setting box office records. Hot on the heels of Black Panther (who obviously is a part of this), we might see it represent another pop culture sensation. The MCU has an incredible track record, but in a very real way, everything has been leading up to this. Kevin Feige’s grand plan is almost upon us.

The film is a culmination of all that the MCU has built so far. Marvel Studios describes it as such: “As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.” IMDb has a more concise version: “The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.” As we all know, the Avengers are led by Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), with other members including Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elisabeth Olsen). Also joining in the fight against Thanos (Josh Brolin) are Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and of course T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), not to mention the Guardians of the Galaxy (Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, etc). Anthony Russo and Joe Russo direct a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, with other cast members including Angela Bassett, Paul Bettany, Linda Cardellini, Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Peter Dinklage, Winston Duke, Idris Elba, Jon Favreau, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Tom Hiddleston, Pom Klementieff, Gwyneth Paltrow, Benedict Wong, Letitia Wright, and many more. This is one of the biggest A-list casts of all time. Alan Silvestri composed the score.

This Trailer suggests a scale almost unheard of, even for comic book movies. Every character is represented, and the MCU is going to have heroes and villains meet that you’d never have imagined. Thanos has been teased out for almost a decade, so finally seeing him in action will be a sight, for sure. Then, just the interplay of all the characters seems like a real treat. In the Trailer, we got a taste of it with Tony Stark/Iron Man sparring with Peter Quill/Star Lord. Any movie that has Downey, Jr. and Pratt doing their special thing with each other is worth seeing. Throw in the Marvel spectacle and, well…wow.

If I had to guess, the MCU will take a major turn from here. Obviously, there’s a high likelihood that many beloved characters will perish. Potential dead heroes walking include Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Vision, and so on. That will raise the stakes, either for the climax of this film or even for the Avengers sequel to come. Then, there’s what the next Phase of the MCU will be like. Feige and company know what’s next, but we’re just speculating right now. Avengers: Infinity War might give us a hint about what’s to come, but the Russo Brothers will reveal what they choose to when the time is right. Luckily, it’s only a little over a month away now.

Awards wise, Avengers: Infinity War is looking strictly like a below the line technical player. Assuming that Best Picture and the major categories are out of play, look for it to potentially contend in Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects. Realistically, the four categories of Makeup & Hairstyling, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects are where this movie can make a play. Maybe it winds up shut out, and to be fair, it’ll be competing against Black Panther in these categories, but it’s worth watching out for.

You can see the Trailer for Avengers: Infinity War next, and it’s really something. Even if it’s ultimately middle of the road Marvel (and that seems unlikely), it’ll still represent a spectacle that demands attention. All eyes will be on the MCU in just over a month when the flick opens on April 27th. As if that’s not enough, we’re only a year out from a currently untitled Avengers 4, which could be even bigger somehow. Behold the Trailer and prepare yourself for more on this massive tentpole as the year progresses. 2018 is really shaping up to be the year of the MCU…

Here now is the Final Trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, in all its glory:

Stay tuned for more on Avengers: Infinity War when it opens next month!
