“Beautiful Boy” – Timothée Chalamet: Hollywood Film Tribute

Today we are recognizing Beautiful Boy, as well as star Timothée Chalamet. Our Hollywood Film Tributes recognize films and talent for their excellence in the art of filmmaking.

In a very short period of time, Timothée Chalamet has become as hot an actor as there is in the field. In demand by top tier filmmakers, Chalamet has shown acting chops, star power, personality, and that X factor which launches a young man into the stratosphere. His turn last year in Call Me By Your Name made him an Oscar nominee, while he also turned heads in the Academy Award nominee Lady Bird. Coming off of small but impactful work in things like Interstellar and Men, Women & Children, he’s now gone to even bigger heights with Beautiful Boy.

From our piece on the film (and Chalamet) back in October:

Based off of two memoirs by David Sheff and Nic Sheff, the movie looks at the effect of drug addiction on a family, specifically a father and son. David (Steve Carell) loves his son Nic (Chalamet) and thinks they’re closer than the average parent/child. That may be true, but he’s still helpless as his boy first privately, and then publicly, becomes a crystal meth addict. We both follow David as he attempts to learn about his son’s struggle and provide support, as well as see Nic hit rock bottom. Considering who wrote the memoirs, there’s a happy ending in sight, to some degree at least, but there’s plenty of tragedy along the way. Felix Van Groeningen directs and co-writes the adaptation with Luke Davies. Supporting players here include Kaitlyn Dever, Jack Dylan Grazer, Timothy Hutton, Amy Ryan, Maura Tierney, and more, with the latter two turning in small yet vital roles. Ruben Impens provides the handsome cinematography.

If we’re just looking at the performances, this film is top notch…Carell and Chalamet are acting their hearts out here.

Beautiful Boy…will be one of Amazon Studios’ big Oscar pushes. The most likely play is Best Supporting Actor for Chalamet, though Best Actor for Carell will also be attempted. Chalamet in Supporting Actor could certainly happen, though Carell in Actor is iffier. Any other nominations, be it Best Picture, Van Groeningen in Best Director, Ryan and/or Tierney in Best Supporting Actress, as well as Davies and Van Groeningen in Best Adapted Screenplay are longer shots. If the response to this flick is what I think it’ll be, this will be Chalamet or bust, provided he stays in Supporting Actor. That’s the best chance for the film to crack a lineup this year.

Chalamet is among the most exciting young actors in the business right now. Regardless of if he ends up with back to back Academy Award nominations, he’s going to be an Oscar staple in the years to come. His personality, his talent, and his clear passion for acting will guide him to a long and fruitful career. There’s no doubt about that. Beautiful Boy has him in the hunt for a second Oscar nod, this time in Best Supporting Actor. That nom may or may not happen, but his star is only on the rise. Before too long, he’s going to be as big an A-lister as the industry has. Hollywood, watch out!
