New Trailer For ‘Shazam!’ Shows DC Having Some Fun

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has more or less chugged along with success after success, the same has not been the case for the DC Cinematic Universe. In fact, it’s largely been considered a misfire. As DC and Warner Bros. attempt to course correct, they’re worrying less about connecting their films and more about making fun ones. To that end, Shazam! looks to be their first near comedy. A new Trailer debuted today for the flick, which opens in just over a month. You’ll be able to see the Trailer at the end of this post, as per the usual. First though, lets talk about it a bit…

The movie is a superhero origin story, as you might have guessed. The rather simple description from IMDb goes like this: “We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word – SHAZAM! – this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam.” Billy (Asher Angel) just has to say the magic word and he turns into Shazam (Zachary Levi). However, he has no clue how to use his newfound powers. Comedic discoveries ensue, aided by his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer). He’ll have to get it together quickly though, as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) looms as a super villain challenge to the hero. David F. Sandberg directs a script by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Maxime Alexandre provides the cinematography, while the score is by Benjamin Wallfisch. The supporting cast for this one includes Adam Brody, D.J. Cotrona, Meagan Good, Djimon Hounsou, and many more.

This film looks like a lot of fun. The Trailer really plays up the comedy and silliness of the premise. Almost every single action beat is paired with a laugh of some sort. Now, the mixture has to seem natural, or it’ll be a forced mess, but it looks rather promising right now. Focusing on the lighter aspect of it all is a welcome tonic for DC and the WB, after they tried to make their Batman and Superman franchises as dark as possible. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just wasn’t handled well. This pivot towards fun is far more of a winning formula for all involved.

DC and Warner Bros. are finally figuring out what works for them. It took long enough, too. The grouping of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League represented a misguided attempt to do what Marvel had done with their MCU, just quicker and bleaker. Now, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the upcoming Shazam! are worrying less about tying it all together and more about just escapism. Wonder Woman remains their high water mark so far to date, but there’s reason to be optimistic that this next one could really help solidify the future of DC superhero outings.

You can see the newest Shazam! Trailer next. The film is only a month away, hitting in early April (April 5th, to be precise). Quietly, this is a comic book flick to really look forward to. It’ll be coming out at an odd time, as Captain Marvel will be about four weeks old, and three weeks before Avengers: Endgame dominates the cinematic landscape. We’ll see if that impacts the box office, but quality wise, the movie appears to be on firm ground. Time will tell for sure, but there’s no reason not to have a sunny disposition about this one. Take a look at the Trailer and see what you think…

Here now is the New Trailer for Shazam!:
