Trailer Drops For Sundance Comedy “Late Night”

Earlier today, a Trailer was released for the upcoming comedy Late Night, which was one of the hot ticket items a few months ago at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. The fest always sees bidding wars for anything that has a whiff of being mainstream, so this was no exception. Amazon Studios paid big money for it, which clearly indicates that they’re hoping to bring it to the masses. With a Trailer hitting this morning, the first step of that plan is in place. You’ll be able to see said Trailer at the bottom of this post, as per the usual, but first, as always…let us talk about it a bit.

The film is a comedic look at the world of a late night talk show (shocking, going by the title, right?). This is the synopsis, via IMDb: “Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a pioneer and legendary host on the late-night talk-show circuit. When she’s accused of being a “woman who hates women,” she puts affirmative action on the to-do list, and —-presto. —- Molly (Mindy Kaling) is hired as the one woman in Katherine’s all-male writers’ room. But Molly might be too little too late, as the formidable Katherine also faces the reality of low ratings and a network that wants to replace her. Molly, wanting to prove she’s not simply a diversity hire who’s disrupting the comfort of the brotherhood, is determine to help Katherine by revitalizing her show and career – and possible effect even bigger change at the same time.” Emma Thompson as a talk show host? Mindy Kaling as her new writer? A somewhat satirical look at this world? Sign me up. Nisha Ganatra directs a script that Kaling herself wrote, with Lesley Barber providing the score and cinematography by Matthew Clark. Supporting players here include Ike Barinholtz, Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Paul Walter Hauser, John Lithgow, Dennis O’Hare, Amy Ryan, Reid Scott, and more. It’s a great cast, to be sure. Reviews out of Sundance were strong, leading Amazon to swoop in and pay big bucks to acquire this one.

From the looks of this Trailer, Late Night should be smart and funny in equal measure. Plus, as I just mentioned above, teaming up Kaling with Thompson just has worlds of potential. Throw in how this represents Kaling’s voice as a screenwriter and it’s something that really seems like a must see. It’s perhaps even something to keep an eye on as an Academy Award player. Not likely across the board, but in Best Original Screenplay for Kaling? Sure, no reason not to consider it for Oscar love there. We’ll know better once it’s out, in terms of awards and such, but this has to be a summer release you have majorly on your radar.

The Trailer for Late Night is up next. You’ll be able to see this one in full on June 7th when it hits theaters. Amazon knows how to get eyeballs on this one, so there’s no reason not to expect a hit. Their release model will put it in theaters across the country. Kaling and Thompson could very well end up being one of the comedic pairings of the year. We shall see, but those who saw it back in January at Sundance were thoroughly amused. We’ll find out in a few months if that charm generated in Park City translates, but there’s cause for some optimism here. For now, check out the Trailer and sit tight for more soon…

Here now is the Trailer for Late Night:

Stay tuned for more on Late Night, which opens in June on the 7th!
