Another Early Update To Academy Award Predictions For 2019 In The Wake Of “Us”

Today, I want to mix two things together. One is a slight tinkering of my early Oscar predictions. The other is to talk a bit about how Us could fare in the awards race. Yes, as you saw in my highly positive review yesterday and as you’ll see in the box office column tomorrow, Jordan Peele’s latest effort is a smash. Of course, that begs the question of attention by the Academy? Will the go for what Peele is offering? Could Lupita Nyong’o get Best Actress love where Toni Collette couldn’t last year for Hereditary? These are some of the things to start pondering…

Academy Award wise, Us probably faces an uphill battle. It’s very nature isn’t especially awards friendly. Still, Universal has a huge commercial and critical hit on their hands, and we’ve seen horror slowly start to get more prestige respect. So, expect a campaign. It will probably be a targeted one, looking at Best Picture, Best Director (for Jordan Peele), Best Actress (for Lupita Nyong’o), Best Original Screenplay (also for Peele), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. Below you’ll be able to see where I think it makes its debut in this early stages of the year, but just keep in mind that we don’t fully know how voters will respond to this.
