Box Office Report For November 8-10
Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, a surprise upset could be brewing, as the high profile sequel Doctor Sleep goes up against the war epic Midway, with holiday offering Last Christmas hoping to make a mark as well. How did they do? Read on to see how the weekend turned out…
Surprisingly taking the top spot today is Midway, though its $17.5 million start is nothing to go crazy over. With a high budget and mediocre reviews, it will be a struggle for this one to turn a profit. However, a win is a win, and this managed to take advantage of Veterans Day tomorrow and score more business than expected.
Unexpectedly ending up at number two is Doctor Sleep, falling short of all expected marks with just over $14 million. Warner Bros. had to be hoping for much more, especially with decent critical praise of the last few weeks. Alas, audiences were not in the mood to revisit The Shining with this sequel.
Next, Playing with Fire managed a third place finish with $12.8 million. John Cena’s family flick was counter programming for sure, but did not break through to many besides those with kids.
Last Christas opened at number four, only generating a about $11.6 million worth of holiday cheer. Chatter over the Trailer and an early release date kept this one from being a hit. Presumably, it will play better on cable in the years to come?
Among indie/limited release titles, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot continued to make a few solid bucks with Kevin Smith’s roadshow style unveiling. On fifteen screens once again it took in a shade over 278K. Like I’ve previously said, as the weeks progress, it will continue to be interesting to see how this one fares, but Smith must be pleased so far!
Also, Honey Boy got its start, making nearly 290k from four screens. A really strong start for an independent title hoping to make a dent in the race this year. Can it build on this? Time will tell, but it’s a promising beginning, for sure…
